Construction in and around the roundabout is really coming along nicely. The big takeaways this week:

  • If you’ve driven around it recently, you’ll see that the circle is being constructed as well as decorative stone walls. The stone wall within the circle will be several feet high and tie into the landscaping within the circle.
  • Starting the week of May 7, a subcontractor will place lithocrete, an architectural concrete with embedded recycled materials, on South Healdsburg Avenue. This along with cobbles placed in the center circle will be used to delineate the flow and direction of Foss Creek. This decorative cobble feature is also porous, which will help cut the amount of storm water run-off.

Here are several photos, taken yesterday, of the stone walls in progress as well as of the circle.

Now on to the rest of the roundabout update:

April 20, 2018

The weather has been cooperating of late, and we continue to make good progress on roundabout construction. The two big takeaways this week:

  • Sidewalks are getting installed for pedestrian access; this includes between Vine and Healdsburg Ave (a sidewalk route that never previously existed for the City), plus the rail trail now connects to Mill Street East. In the coming weeks, sidewalks on South Healdsburg Avenue to Singletree will also be installed.
  • A subcontractor will start to install the irrigation system and top soil in several areas around the roundabout to prep for greenery planting.

And now on to the rest of the roundabout construction update:

April 6, 2018

The big takeaways this week:

Rain and more rain: The rain this week and next is delaying some construction work; the contractor is trying to keep the dirt areas dry, so it won’t open up more areas. That way, Bay Cities can start work as soon as possible after the rains cease.

East Mill Now Open: Bay Cities excavated the temporary road pavement and installed the first layer of permanent asphalt, so East Mill St. is now open one way for eastbound traffic.

Traffic Pattern Switch: The traffic pattern has been switched back to circular access – no more 4-way stop. This pattern will remain for the duration of construction.

Sidewalks: The contractor is pouring the new sidewalk on South Healdsburg Avenue down to Singletree, in front of Parish Cafe on West Mill, on Healdsburg Avenue near the Chamber onto Vine, as well as on East Mill. In the coming weeks, after Bay Cities does more work, pedestrians will have better access to these areas.

Now onto the rest of the construction update:

Southwest Surface Improvements (South Healdsburg Avenue and West Mill)

  • Backfilled grade beams. This work is being extended into next week.

Next week:

  • Place and compact aggregate base at hardscape areas
  • Place base rock and concrete at driveways and pedestrian approaches
  • The following week, form and pour concrete paving areas, including sidewalks!

Northwest Surface Improvements (Healdsburg Avenue) between Vine and Healdsburg Ave North
Next week:

  • Form and pour concrete paving areas, including sidewalks!

East Mill St. Surface Improvements

  • Formed, poured and stripped standard curb and gutter and sidewalk areas!
  • Placed base lift for hot-mix asphalt (HMA)
  • Switched traffic pattern back to circular access

Roundabout Construction
Next week:

  • Remove old pavement within the circle, weather pemitting
  • Sub-grade and rock-grade roundabout perimeter

March 30, 2018

We’re making a good amount of headway into roundabout construction. We have four big takeaways this week:

  • West Mill Driveway Work: Next Monday, April 2, Bay Cities will grade, place base rock, and concrete the driveway and pedestrian approach on West Mill. Please note that the contractor will work on half of the driveway at a time so cars can still use it to access Parish Café, Elephant in the Room, Mill Street Antiques, and Luminate Spa. Bay Cities will do the first half of this work on Monday, April 2, and the last half on or around Monday, April 9. The concrete needs time to properly cure, so the driveway will be fully open around April 16.
  • Road Excavation on East Mill: The contractor will excavate a portion of East Mill, from Center Street to the driveway, on Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3. This work is to prep the road for new road installation (hot-mix asphalt) on April 4. The HMA will smooth and help “finish” the road for vehicular traffic.
  • East Mill opening early-mid April: We are scheduled to open East Mill to vehicular traffic in early-mid April, likely around April 9. Note that while the cars can access East Mill once we open this street, there will be intermittent closures as Bay Cities continues and completes construction and road work later into the year. However, these intermittent closures won’t last for more than one day at a time. We know you’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so we appreciate your patience.
  • Traffic pattern switching to circular access: As work progresses, on or about April 5, we will be able to switch from the current 4-way stop traffic pattern back to the roundabout circular access. If plans change, we will let you know ASAP.
