Category Archives: Construction Updates

These weekly/bi-weekly updates to local merchants provide an overview of construction progress on the roundabout.

October 23, 2018

The City and Bay Cities recently came into agreement regarding soil processing and planting at the roundabout, and work is moving forward. The trees — which include crape myrtles, Italian cypress and olive trees — were delivered earlier this week and will be planted concurrently with soil-screening to remove large aggregate and man-made objects.

Here are a few photos taken of some of the trees and landscape prep this afternoon:

Shrubs will be delivered next week. The planting of the more than 2,800 trees, shrubs and other plants should be complete by Wednesday, November 21.

Save the Date: That’s just in time for the City to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 29, to mark the completion of the roundabout. We’re working out the details now; we’ll provide all of the information soon.

September 28, 2018

If you’ve driven the roundabout recently, you’ll see that roundabout is now fully functional and the project is just about complete. Here are most of the remaining items:

Landscaping: Planting has been delayed due to the composition of the soil, but it will be amended and further screened to ensure it’s ready in the coming weeks for the planting of close to 3,000 plants, shrubs and trees.

Irrigation System: This is just about complete; sprinkler heads need to be installed.

Signage: Almost all of the permanent signs, such as street signs and roundabout signage, have been erected.

Lighting: Almost all of the new streetlights have been installed around/near the roundabout and are working. The City will install several more streetlights on West Mill Street in the near future.

Redwood fences: The contractor has built redwood fences north of Singletree Café and Elephant in the Room to demarcate these properties.

Cones and flags: The orange cones at the roundabout connote drop-off areas where more dirt will be installed. The small orange flags mark the areas for landscaping. These markers will be removed in the coming weeks.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony: We’ve scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Thursday, November 15, to commemorate the completion of the roundabout.

Spring Celebration: The city will throw a much bigger shindig in the spring of 2019 to celebrate the roundabout’s completion.

August 17, 2018

Now that school is back in session, that means summer is over. That also means that the we are entering the final stage of the roundabout construction!

Here’s what will be done in the next few weeks:

  • From about 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, and for about one hour on the morning of Wednesday, August 22: Southbound Healdsburg Avenue traffic, between Matheson Street and the roundabout, will be closed to vehicular traffic so the contractor can raise the manhole lids on Healdsburg Ave. and make them flush with the road surface. Please take alternate routes during these times.
  • The contractor will install permanent signage (e.g. Pedestrian Crossing, Yield, etc.)
  • The contractor will remove old road striping and pavement markers and perform final striping on Vine Street and South Healdsburg Ave.
  • There may be some road closures in the last week of August or early part of September so the contractor can microsurface the streets near the roundabout to help preserve the paved roads. We will provide more information on these road closures once we have a traffic-management plan.

Now, on to the rest of the update:

Railroad Construction
This week: A subcontractor is finishing installation of railroad equipment for future railroad-crossing arms.

Southwest Surface Improvements (S. Healdsburg Ave.)
This week: Installed the fence along the creek between Singletree Café and Elephant in the Room

Southeast Surface Improvements (S. Healdsburg Ave.)
This week: The contractor finished performing rock grade surface improvements and forming and pouring concrete sidewalks.
Next week: The contractor will place interlocking pavers on the southeast side of Healdsburg Avenue, by Rockpile Winery, Shoffeitt’s, Healdsburg Tap Room, and Twisst.

Vine St. Surface Improvements
This week: A subcontractor finished forming and pouring concrete sidewalks.

Striping, Pavement Markers & Signage
This week: The contractor is raising iron to finish grade – this will continue into next week. Raising iron means to bring valves and manhole lids to the surface of the roadway so they can be accessed.  During final paving, the contractor paves over the tops to provide a nice smooth road surface.
Next week:
– Welding all of the interiors on the sewer manholes to make them water-tight.
– Install permanent signage; this will continue into the following week.

Landscaping:
This week and into next week: A subcontractor will complete the installation of the irrigation system and improve and prep the soil for planting.

August 3, 2018

The big takeaways this week:

  • This Saturday (August 4th), there will be intermittent closures of southbound Healdsburg Avenue, northbound Vine Street and Mill Street west due to construction work on several of the roundabout median islands ahead of final paving. This work will occur during the day, between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • This coming Monday and Tuesday (August 6th-7th), between 8 p.m.-6 a.m., we need to close North/South Healdsburg Avenue, East/West Mill Street, and Vine Street to vehicular traffic so the contractor can perform final paving of these roads leading into/out of the roundabout. Please take alternate routes; detour routes will be signed to provide access around the closures.

June 22, 2018

The big takeaway this week is there will be night road work this Sunday, June 24, through Thursday, June 28. In order to create a smooth road surface, the City contractor will dig up old asphalt and concrete and re-pave sections of road near the roundabout each night –- between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. — to minimize disruption and inconvenience to Healdsburg residents, workers, and visitors.

This work makes it necessary to close vehicular access to the roundabout between 8 p.m. – 6 a.m., June 24-28, from:

• South Healdsburg Avenue from Exchange Avenue.
• Westside Road/ West Mill from Vineyard Plaza/Carl’s Jr. driveway
• East Mill from Center Street
• North Healdsburg from Matheson
• Vines Street from Vineyard Plaza entrance

Please note that from Monday through Wednesday, June 25-27, the road surface into and through the roundabout will be gravel/compacted rock, so please drive more carefully and slower than usual. Please consider using alternate routes during this time.

Parts or all of Healdsburg Ave. south of the circle may be closed during this night-time work, but we will confirm all details in the near future once we finalize the plan.
  • Looking ahead: In the first two weeks of July, the contractor is tentatively scheduled to build a long median island on Healdsburg Ave. south of the circle and small “pork-chop style” medians on East and West Mill, N.
